Shameer Nurani's remarkable achievement of being awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship is a testament to his perseverance and consistent discipline. This esteemed scholarship, which facilitates academic exchange and collaboration across the globe, highlights Shameer’s commitment to furthering his education and contributing to international understanding. His academic path, once marked by early challenges like barely passing English in his SSLC exams, has blossomed into a remarkable success story, culminating in one of the world's most esteemed scholarships.Hailing from a small village near Perambra in Kozhikode district, Shameer grew up in a community where education often ended at the 12th grade. Most students, including his elder siblings, transitioned directly into the workforce. Given his initial academic struggles, doubts surrounded Shameer's ability to even complete his 12th-grade education. Shameer himself acknowledges that without joining Markaz Garden after SSLC, he might not have pursued higher studies.
Local leaders recognized a troubling trend: students were losing interest in further education, with only those attending specific institutions continuing their studies. Their intervention proved pivotal. It was Uncle Ashraf Latheefi, impressed by the accomplishments of Jaseel Nurani, a local student studying in Jamia Madeenathunnoor Poonoor, who brought Shameer to Markaz Garden. This decision transformed Shameer's life. His dreams expanded, and he embraced a relentless dedication to learning. The immersive environment at Markaz Garden allowed him to study from dawn till dusk.
Shameer's skills flourished. He excelled academically while engaging in extracurricular activities and language studies. Humble and ever-curious, he readily sought guidance. With support from classmates and senior mentors, Shameer's English proficiency soared. His work gained recognition, with responses published in The Hindu and insightful articles finding an audience.
While consistently among the top three in the exams of Islamic Studies, Shameer's academic path wasn't initially clear-cut. He pursued a Sociology degree. After completing the seven-year course at the Garden, discussions involving students, teachers, and parents led to the decision that a law degree would suit Shameer's exceptional skills in Mantiq. Simultaneously, he prepared for entrance exams, successfully gaining admission to the International Relations PG program at JNU, a top Indian university.
The Civil Services Coaching Centre at Markaz Garden, initiated under the late Chaliyam Bava Haji's sponsorship, played a crucial role. Classes on global and Indian political movements and historical events enriched Shameer's knowledge. Fazal Nurani, a Civil Services rank holder, also credits this academy for his success.
During his third semester of post-graduation, he secured NET, and by the fourth, he achieved JRF. He pursued an MPhil, exploring the intersection of nuclear weapons and Islamic laws of warfare, followed by a PhD on how Islam proposes solutions for international conflicts, focusing on the Israel-Palestine issue. His research has been published in English by Routledge, one of the leading publications across the globe and in Malayalam by IPB Publications.
Today, Shameer is an assistant professor in Kerala University's Department of West Asian Studies and serves as an editor for the prestigious journals of Cambridge and Taylor & Francis. Many students from modest backgrounds hesitate to pursue higher education, especially abroad, due to financial concerns. While JRF support may have eased some burdens, earlier costs might have posed challenges. However, Markaz Garden's free facilities and resources provide peace of mind to talented students. Initiatives like RCFI offer financial aid to scholars like Shameer studying in Delhi.
Our resources—wealth, time, facilities, and energy—are dedicated to enabling such educational revolutions. Talents like Shameer inspire us, exceeding our expectations and giving us the courage to overcome any obstacle.
