From Faith to Freedom: An Islamic Perspective on Nationhood
Dr. MAH Azhari
As we celebrate Independence Day on August 15, it is essential to reflect on the true meaning of freedom, not just as a historical achievement but also as an ongoing commitment to the values that uphold and protect that freedom. For Muslims, these values are deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam, which provide a framework for justice, equality, and compassion that are vital for the sustenance of a free and harmonious society.
Islam places a strong emphasis on freedom, considering it a divine right bestowed upon every individual. The Qur’an highlights this in several verses, underscoring the importance of human dignity, equality, and the freedom to believe: “There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong” (Qur’an 2:256). This verse signifies the respect Islam holds for individual choice and freedom of conscience, integral to any free society. It echoes the values of independence and liberty that we commemorate on this day.
The struggle for independence is a shared chapter in the history of many nations, and it is often characterized by the quest for justice and equality. Islamic history is replete with examples where these values guided the actions of its followers. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions faced immense hardships in their quest for freedom and justice. They strived to establish a society based on the principles of fairness, mutual respect, and the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their race, religion, or social status.
Islam also encourages the protection and betterment of one’s community and nation, fostering a sense of national unity and patriotism. Islamic leaders have played pivotal roles in various freedom movements throughout history, leading by example and contributing significantly to the struggles for independence. These leaders understood that their faith called them not only to spiritual pursuits but also to active engagement in their communities to promote justice and equality. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The best of people are those who bring the most benefit to the rest of mankind.” (Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat by Tabarani). This hadith encapsulates the essence of Islamic teachings, emphasizing the responsibility of individuals to contribute positively to society and promote the welfare of their communities.
A society can only truly thrive when justice and equality are upheld. In Islam, these are not just legal concepts but moral imperatives. The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice: “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives” (Qur’an 4:135). This verse highlights the importance of impartiality and fairness, even when it might be difficult. It serves as a reminder of our responsibilities as citizens to uphold justice, which is essential for maintaining the freedom we celebrate on Independence Day.
In addition, Islamic teachings promote peace, tolerance, and coexistence with people of different faiths and backgrounds. This emphasis on peace and coexistence is vital for building a society where all individuals can live together in harmony, free from discrimination and prejudice. Muslims are encouraged to contribute positively to society and engage in nation-building activities that benefit all members of the community, regardless of their differences. The Prophet ﷺ also taught: “The believer is not one who eats his fill while his neighbor is hungry.” (Sunan al-Kubra by al-Nasa'i). This saying highlights the importance of caring for others and maintaining harmonious relationships within the community.
Moreover, the Islamic tradition honors diversity and recognizes the beauty in the different cultures and communities that make up a nation. By celebrating diversity and pluralism, we acknowledge the unique contributions of each individual and group to the richness of our society.
This appreciation for diversity strengthens the bonds between different communities and promotes unity and solidarity.
